Many parents look for ballet classes for their kids. Sometimes, kids beg their parents for ballet classes. Ballet is a well-known rite of passage for many kids. However, you may still have some questions about ballet classes for kids.
The more you understand ballet, the easier it is to choose an excellent ballet class for your child. These FAQs will help you understand ballet classes for kids. At the International Ballet Academy, we are committed to a truly holistic ballet experience. We are not here just for signups; we are here to ensure you and your child understand and enjoy ballet.
What Age Should Kids Begin Ballet?
The short answer, kids can begin at any time. At the International Ballet Academy, we offer toddler and preschool caregiver and me classes.
The longer answer, true ballet training often begins around age 6-8. This is when children can truly develop proper ballet techniques.
Beginning with caregiver and me classes, helps kids become familiar with dance terms, instructions, and technique. This makes it easier to jump right in with training as soon as they are older.

Is Ballet Only For Girls
No way! While it is more common to see little girls taking ballet classes, ballet is truly for everyone! This is a common misconception all dance companies are trying to dispel. Why? Ballet needs boys and men to fulfill some of the greatest ballets, such as the Nutcracker.
Performances aside, many athletes take ballet to improve their overall fitness and balance. Ballet is a wonderful art form and physical activity for all.
For children, ballet improves overall strength, balance, coordination, motor skills, and more. These skills can even set the stage for improved academic performance. The connection between academic achievement and physical activity is astounding.
If your son is interested in ballet, signing up at the International Ballet Academy is a great way to help him explore. If your children, regardless of gender, participate in other activities such as gymnastics or football, ballet training can help improve their other athletic skills.
What Classes Are Available For Children?
Lots of classes are available based on your child’s age, skill level, and interest. Ballet is something we feel should be available to everyone, regardless of age and ability.
At the International Ballet Academy, we offer classes for older infants and toddlers, along with preschoolers, and their caregiver. We begin independent classes when children are about 6 years old. At this age they are able to typically listen to their instructors without extra guidance throughout the entire class.
After age 6-8, we offer ballet classes based on experience. We offer levels one through four. With our layout of classes, we ensure everyone is able to master each skill level before moving forward.
Our classes include:
- Baby/Toddler Dance With Me
- Dance With Me – Preschool Age
- Primary Ballet – Age 6-8
- Ballet Level 1
- Ballet Level 2
- Ballet Level 3
- Ballet Level 4
If your child is new to ballet and under age 6, one of our Dance With Me classes would be appropriate. For children over the age of 8, their class will be based on experience. You can learn more and register by visiting our classes and curriculum page.
My Child Has A Disability, Can They Take Ballet?
Yes! At the International Ballet Academy, we believe ballet should be accessible to all. We have an adaptive ballet class to ensure every child has access to quality ballet classes.
Ballet training builds strength, coordination, and endurance. These can benefit all children. For those who may need extra time or adaptations to certain dance skills, our adaptive class is adjusted to meet their unique needs.
In our adaptive class, everyone can build strength, endurance, and coordination but without the stress and pressure of asking their body to do something it may not yet be ready to do.
